Virtual Graffiti — Loading (Grand Palais Immersif)
Tag for real, without a drop of paint: a 3D-printed, tracked spray can at the Grand Palais Immersif.
"Virtual Graffiti" is the public interactive installation presented within "Loading. Urban Art in the Digital Age" at the Grand Palais Immersif (December 6, 2023 to July 21, 2024), for Atlas V. The experience begins on a touchscreen: the visitor types their tag name and picks an artist's style, generating the outline of their piece on a large projected screen. With a custom spray can, 3D-printed and tracked by an HTC Vive system, they choose their colors and paint inside their outline, in real time in Unity. I served as creative technologist and experience designer. The exhibition unfolds in 360 across the venue's monumental spaces.
Exhibition Dec 6, 2023 to Jul 21, 2024.
Technical details
The interactive chain begins on a touchscreen where the visitor enters their tag name and selects a style, generating the outline of their piece on a large projected screen. A custom spray can, 3D-printed and fitted with an HTC Vive tracker, then lets them paint in real time within a dedicated palette, the rendering computed in Unity. The whole challenge was to recover the gesture of graffiti without a single drop of paint.
